This is a great book for adults and teens who are interested in the poetry of Maya Angelou and the artwork of Jean-Michel Basquiat. But I don't think the message can be comprehended by younger children. Throughout the book, Angelou states that life doesn't frighten her. That's a powerful statement for adults and older kids, but for younger kids, it might set them up for defeat. I'd prefer to read a book to my young child about how life is sometimes frightening, but with courage we can work through it. The biographical information at the back of the book could be helpful for children doing research on either Angelou or Basquiat.
