Cheech and Chong probably don't get the credit they deserve for founding the stoner buddy comedy, which is now so prevalent. You do wish their films were actually funny or, at least, not so terrible. You can't do much with a film that thinks naming an Asian character Toyota Kawasaki is funny, even if you're stoned. "Up in Smoke," from 1978, is the first of their many films together and features a van made of weed. It is a semi-important culture artifact, but it is pretty awful. Stacy Keach, Tom Skeritt, and Strother Martin co-star. Lou Adler, who produced the Mamas & the Papas, directs, sorta.
