Tevye is a poor Jewish milkman with five unmarried daughters to support in a village in Czarist Russia. With a sharp tongued wife at home and growing anti-Semitism in the village, Tevye talks to God about his troubles. His people's traditions keep him strong when his existence is as precariously balanced as a fiddler on the roof.

Rarely do I see a movie more than once but this is a movie I've seen several times before and will see again every so often. Truly a masterpiece.

GREAT 1971 film musical set in Ukraine village in 1890's Russia.
Not sure why it's taken me so long to see this fabulous work of art - but now I have - and recommend you view it too!

I can't believe I had never seen this movie until now. Very enjoyable and by far the best original soundtrack.

An excellent adaptation of an outstanding musical! Topol is wonderful, and so is everyone else. Funny, but deeply moving.

Directed by Norman Jewison "Fiddler on the Roof" is a movie masterpiece. It is hard to believe it been over 40 years since this 1971 movie was released. It has played on Broadway and every small theater in America that wanted to produce it. Still there is no denying that the original film is the best interpretation of the play "Fiddler on the Roof". The first thing that sticks out to me is the famed John Williams soundtrack. He wrote a perfect score that captures the feeling of 1900 Czarist Russia. The second thing that stands out only in a movie, is the location shots of Russia. These were beautifully captured by cinematographer Oswald Morris. Third, and maybe foremost, the movie Fiddle on the Roof has a great cast. Now Topol stared on both Broadway and in the film, but we now only can see him on film. He is terrific as Tevye who has five daughters that he would like to have arranged marriages. The story is beautifully played out as the girls want someone other than what the matchmaker arranges for them. In other words, they will not settle for someone they don't love. So begins the love story of a family and those who come courting the daughters. Remarkable costumes, great sets, music that you just can't stop singing, and a story that will make you laugh and cry. One of the best filmed musicals of all time! Please be sure to let me know right here on the KCLS web site how you liked the film. Thanks!!

A Jewish father struggles to cope with all the changes going on around him-his three daughters are all getting married "for love", the government is taking a despotic turn, and things aren't simple anymore. What happened to tradition? Will life ever be the same? 12+ for some violence (no blood), scary images, and when the main character is drunk (along with some other guys in a tavern).

They gave each other a pledge? Unheard of. Absurd.
