The first feature film of Hugo's novel is a large, lavish production with the proverbial cast of 1000's. Man of a Thousand faces Lon Chaney plays the title character and is both hideous and sympathetic. That it is silent and in black and white (although there are many tinted scenes, which are cool) might deter less adventurous viewers, but the story is compelling, the sets impressive and the performances good. Also, recommended: the Chaney version of "The Phantom of the Opera." You can also find this film streaming on Netflix.
