Baker & Taylor
Dismayed to find his new jurisdiction struggling with such challenges as drug activities, sexual abuse, and poverty, Montana county sheriff Kip Edelson embarks on an investigation involving the suspicious deaths of two people, a case with ties to a local reprobate.

In Mineral Spirits, Sheriff Kip Edelson investigates the story behind a woman's skeleton that a young boy stumbles across on a river bank. He gets a tip that her name was Chris and he knows her death was not accidental-but little else. As he traces Mineral County residents with similar names and seeks clues to who might have killed her and why, a story evolves that includes drug dealers, a shootout, an abandoned boy, and the sheriff's own marital strains.

Blackwell North Amer
When 10-year-old Gray Dausman discovers a skeleton on the banks of Montana's Clark Fork River, it launches him and Mineral County's new sheriff, Kip Edelson, on a search for the victim's identity and killer.
Edelson, after concluding the victim's death was not accidental, receives a tip that her name was Chris. He embarks on an investigation of county residents with similar names. His odyssey, through the onetime mining town of Magda, now a near-ghost town, and the wild countryside of Mineral County, a remote stretch along the Montana-Idaho border, uncovers not only that the young Gray has a missing mother sharing that name: he also stumbles on a drug ring involving several members of the community, and is forced to kill one of them in a shoot-out, sparking desperate behavior from the man's wife and her brother.
As Edelson's search for the murdered woman's identity and her killer becomes obsessive, his own marriage is breaking apart. Through all this he is unable to turn his back on Gray and develops a paternal, protective affection for the boy, whose own father is harshly neglectful. Sheriff Edelson faces a series of difficult decisions as an officer of the law and as a man, before finally solving the crime.

If you're looking for a story that evokes the beauty of the mountains and rivers of Montana along with the hard scrabble towns that dot its' landscape you will find it here, written by an author that has a fierce love of it. But this is more than just a 'regional' piece of fiction. The characters are deeply believable, struggling through difficult situations the best way they can find. My bet is that you will find yourself rooting for them. I sure did.
