Directed by Vincente Minnelli in 1952, this American drama depicts the rise and fall of a legendary Hollywood producer.
Although the insider's look at Tinseltown seems quite interesting, the major actors appear overacting and looks like a slapstick comedy from time to time.
Disappointing!

IMO - 1952's "The Bad and the Beautiful" was clearly a product of its time. (Meaning) - Its "behind-the-scenes" story may have impressed (and, yes, even shocked) movie audiences back in its day - But, today - Its story of treachery, betrayal, and Hollywood back-stabbing was pretty tame stuff, all round.

Another thing that I felt was something of a drawback with this production was Vincent Minnelli's direction which I found to be quite heavy-handed at times.

But, with that all said - Yes. This vintage picture did have it fair share of good moments, too.

First off - I think that this film's title "The Bad and the Beautiful" is absolutely dreadful. To me, it sounds more like the title of some cheap, lurid little dime-store novel rather than that of a big-budget Hollywood production.

Anyway - Yes. I do realize that the Hays Code was, indeed, still in effect back in 1952 and this clearly played a big part in determining the "safe" direction that this film's story took.

But, regardless of that - I had certainly expected "The Bad and the Beautiful" to pack more of a ruthless and scandalous bite than it inevitably did. IMO - Its story-line was all too carefully manicured for my liking.

The movie was trying to do too much to prove a point about the the dark and loathsome nature of Douglas' character (and ends up saying that if you make great films, you get a pass. ) it starts off with his infidelity to his wife, which comes out of left field and was a race to the finish from that point on. The same picture can be seen in the behavior of some if not all of today's movie moguls. Perhaps a movie should be made based on the book "Hollywood Babylon" by Kenneth Anger.

This film is all beautiful, no bad, and comes with a superior special extra on the life and extraordinary times of Lana Turner. Her life, her many men who often turned out to be wretches, told by daughter in a poignant way, makes this edition the one to get. This story is as remarkable as the movie.

Director Vincent Minnelli made cinema history. He takes a story about a washed up Hollywood producer, and shows the lengths he will go to, in his drive for a hit movie. It is like turing the camera around and filming the producer, director, stars and crew filming a movie. We are helped with wonderful performances from Kirk Douglas, Lana Turner, Walter Pidgeon, Barry Sullivan, and Leo G. Carroll. I love watching the inside of Hollywood. There is such a rich story of characters. The competing egos is enough to halt productions. "The Bad and The Beautiful" shows us a slice of Hollywood. The director and producer always seem to battle the studio to get the picture made the way they want it.

An ode to old-time producers and studio executives, who, despite their many faults, loved the movies. A mix of melodrama, comedy, and a judicious amount of truth.
