For me, this ranks right up there with Christmas Vacation, Scrooged and A Christmas Story - All classics to visit every Holiday season. Love it!

A good time of the year to go back to this book if you haven't read it, and pick it up for the first time if you have. Smart, dry humor is Sedaris' trademark and he doesn't disappoint here.

Offensive and ableist language such as the r-word.

Simply ccould not get into this book. Many reviewers said it was very funny. I guess everyone's sense of humor is unique, and the author's is not like mine.

The cover and title are deceiving, gulling you from the very start. It conjures the promise of egg nog, warming your feet by the fire, sitting down to chat with the grandparents and kids. Oh, you poor fools. Look closer. On the cover, that boy in the middle is in danger of sinking to his death beneath the ice. Danger, humiliation, death and disease lie within these covers. Enter if you dare.

The stories range from the wildly risible (“Santaland”) to the subtle horror of an ultimate case of keeping up with the Joneses (“Christmas Means Giving”). Mr. Sedaris’s deadpan delivery and queer way of digging into the rotten underbelly of the world are on full display here. If you’ve ever wanted an antidote to the treacly mess of the seasons, especially Christmas, expose yourself to this collection.

I loved the first essay, "SantaLand Diaries"! It will have you laughing out loud the whole way through. A few of the other stories fell flat for me, but overall a fun read.

Another book club pick, and well we were pretty split on it. Two of us listened to the audiobook and enjoyed it less than people who read the book. The audiobook just seemed a bit too slow, and not quite as funny. But apparently if you read this book it is great! My favourite story was definitely when Sedaris is a Christmas elf - I would be interested to know if this is actually a true story, or if it is fabricated. It is hard to tell because it is in his own voice, but other stories in this collection are so clearly not true, that I wonder about this one.

This book isn't very funny. It IS supposed to be funny isn't it? Much better cover photo than Barrel Fever, however.
