Rejecting her Indo-Pakistani family's traditional views in favor of a career as a journalist, Muslim-American Saira Qader finds her life thrown into turmoil five years later by a tragedy that reveals to Saira the culturally rich stories of her parents, aunt, and grandparents.

Blackwell North Amer

“A brainy, beautiful braid of stories about three generations of a Muslim family. This book…will go a long way toward deconstructing stereotypes about American Muslims, and that, on top of its value as a work of fiction, makes it a treasure.” — Minneapolis Star Tribune

A brilliant bestselling debut novel from author Nafisa Haji, The Writing on My Forehead describes one woman’s struggle with the Indo-Pakistani traditions of her family and her own independence. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Nafisa Haji a “talented new writer of sense and a distinct sensibility,” and Khaled Hosseini, beloved author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, calls The Writing on My Forehead “a moving meditation… lyrical and touching.”

What a wonderful insight into the world of a subcontinent immigrant family before and after 9/11! The interplay of cultures, generations, family secrets and gossip, and choices runs thru Saira's story. Weighing a career against tradition and family loyalty is quite a dilemma. So many subjects are touched upon in this story...India's independence, Pakistan's birth, wealth vs. poverty, journalism and more. I never guessed the biggest secret of all that changes everything.

such a beautiful piece of art. i couldn't put it down and it's left an indelible mark on me. it resounds with me as someone that immigrated to the west. it's a story about loyalty, family, responsibility and all the ways that we become who we are.
