I have to be contrarian here: I thought KISS KISS KISS and I'M MOVING ON were good in their place, the modern music place. John was still telling us about his ( their ) life, as if answering the question, "hey, man, what's been going on. haven't heard from you for about 5 years, what's going on?" my favorite track is CLEAN UP TIME, not for the words, but for the boogie vamp from the bass and piano, and the singing. WATCHING THE WHEELS received a lot of radio air play after john was assassinated, but it's not close to being his best song. it answers the question of what's on his mind, now, after the hiatus (then unusual for those in the industry, as it was feared your public would move on, forget you, if you did not keep putting product out there for them). it is interesting to speculate what john meant by the central metaphor, both for the song, and the name of the album, DOUBLE FANTASY. I need to note here that later in the decade those copycats, the stones, released an album entitled STEEL WHEELS.
Who was responsible for the "one John song/one Yoko song" configuration through the whole album? It was you, wasn't it Lennon? Why did you torture us like that? Your songs are excellent...a five star effort. Yoko's songs are like listening to a baby seal getting bludgeoned by a Louisville Slugger. If only you'd seen fit to put all of your songs on one side of the album and all of hers on the other, so we wouldn't have to program every other song out of the lineup, that would have been great! I usually pair Lennon's songs from this album with his posthumous songs from Milk and Honey, which shares Double Fantasy's unfortunate track configuration. Between the two albums, without any of Yoko's barking and wailing, you'll hear one of Lennon's most solid efforts. With Yoko mixed in? I'm being generous giving this album three stars.
Not as good as Power to the People I must say.... There are a few good songs like 3 or so and I think Yoko Ono's songs are not great at all. John Lennon is good singing by himself or with The Beatles ONLY!
