Emily and her friends think they'll find the help they need in Cielis, but something isn't right. Streets that were once busy are deserted, and the townspeople who are left live in crippling fear. Emily is escorted to the Academy where she's expected to compete for a spot on the Guardian Council, the most powerful Stonekeepers. But as the number of competitors gets smaller and smaller, a terrible secret is slowly uncovered--a secret that, if left buried, means certain destruction of everything Emily fights for.

This book was not as good as the other ones because it wasn't as fun to read. It could be better. It was isn't as interisting.

Emily and company arrive at the city of Cielis hopeful for help in their quest. Instead the people seem terrified and Emily finds herself participating in trials to join the council instead of speaking to them. Emily thinks there's something wrong but her mother insists that this is just part of life and to just do whatever she's told to. This, ultimately, ends up being a bad piece of advice. Instead of help, Emily finds herself at even more of a disadvantage but in knowing what she doesn't know she's better prepared to face what's ahead.
