Brilliantly researched and wonderfully written, LOVE AND CAPITAL is a heartbreaking and dramatic saga of the family side of the man whose works would redefine the world after his death.

Drawing upon years of research, acclaimed biographer Mary Gabriel brings to light the story of Karl and Jenny Marx's marriage. We follow them as they roam Europe, on the run from governments amidst an age of revolution and a secret network of would-be revolutionaries, and see Karl not only as an intellectual, but as a protective father and loving husband, a revolutionary, a jokester, a man of tremendous passions, both political and personal.

In LOVE AND CAPITAL, Mary Gabriel has given us a vivid, resplendent, and truly human portrait of the Marxes-their desires, heartbreak and devotion to each other's ideals.

Book News
Few biographies of Marx have interrogated his family life in detail. Gabriel, author of other 19th century-focused biographies, offers a human story about the love and women that supported Karl Marx when he became larger than life as one of the most influential figures of the 19th century. Gabriel starts early in Marx's life, in the 1830s and goes beyond Karl himself considering his three daughters, two of whom committed suicide. In between is a story in which the Marx family endures hardship, betrayal and revolution. Divided into seven parts, sub-sections focus on specific years in their lives. At the beginning of the book is an exhaustive cast of characters and a political time-line. Two sections of black-and-white plates present images of the Marx family and their closest associates. Behind every genius man, there is a genius woman. What a story! Story of family, friendship, emigration, poverty and debauchery.

Great family saga with a political and historical background. Stories like these help to put the issues of our current lives in perspective.
