Following in the footsteps of what was less than one of the best superhero films, "Batman Begins" (2005), the previous film's director, Chris Nolan, creates what still stands today as likely the very best ever. Everything that didn't propel his other piece is reversed here and what we get is an astonishing dramatic actioner of the first kind with characters that have rarely, if ever, been so well structured in such a genre work. Not only do we leave behind the fun Joker of 20th c. comics, TV, and even Tim Burton's film "Batman" (1989), but Heath Ledger gives a performance of a literate top shelf film villain, something comic book adaptations didn't even dare consider before. This takes everything the Batman character has added to his mythos for nearly a century - comics, TV, cartoons, other movies - and builds on the recent darker nature of the Bat. As good as Christian Bale is here as our hero, he doesn't stand a chance against the mesmerizing performance of Ledger, who is completely in control of every scene he steps into. Any weaknesses the film may have cannot lessen the impact of the story and characters. There is nothing of comic books that has ever touched this one so far and there is likely not to be such for a long, long time. I have a personal favorite comic film that is not so dark, but from an objective view, this one's the deepest, smartest, most literate non-comic bookish of them all.

This movie is amazing. It's dark, and you'll have to decide who the "real" villains are in the film. Set pieces, sound, and music are awesome. Gotham never looked so good.

The most well made and thoughtful film in the superhero genre.

Batman at peak career, as far as the movie series goes. It's pretty great, though I don't know if Heath Ledger is my favorite Joker; I'm rather fond of Jack Nicholson and Mark Hamill.

Brilliant writing, really shows how to write a good hero and an evil villain.

The Chechen: [During a private sit down meeting with the gangsters] What do you propose?

The Joker: It's simple. We, uh, kill the Batman.

[mobsters laugh]

Salvatore Maroni: If it's so simple, why haven't you done it already?

The Joker: If you're good at something, never do it for free.

Violence: Most of the movie dosnt show much, but implies a lot, with the exceptions of a few scenes especially a burnt face. But this is a very dark movie. But a great one.

Violence: Very intense. There is a pychopath who kills people for fun. No blood, if they added a bit of blood and one or two more swear words, it would be R.

Violence: People get killed, KO'd, beaten up really bad, dropped from the second floor. Yeah, it's pretty standard for a superhero movie, lots of beat'em up and such. But you've got to admit, Batman has got some rad fighting skills, I'll give him a 10/10 for just those.
