Vittorio, educated in the Florence of Cosimo de' Medici, trained in knighthood at his father's mountaintop castle, inhabits a world of courtly splendor and country splendor, This is shattered when his entire family is destroyed in a bizarre and horrible act of violence committed by an unholy power, but Vittorio himself is spared by the Vampire Ursula, the most beautiful of his supernatural enemies. As he sets out in pursuit of vengeance, entering the nightmarish court of the Ruby Grail, increasingly more enchanted (and confused) by his love for the mysterious Ursula, he finds himself confronted by demonic adversaries, by war and political intrigue.

After reading “The Vampire Chronicles”, it was difficult to consider this story as part of a new and distinct series of vampire tales. I immediately started drawing the parallels. For instance, Vittorio shares the love of art with Marius, he is young like Armand, and the Red Guild is the counterpart to the satanic Parisian coven. And certainly, if only they had met, Vittorio’s knowledge and experience with spirits would have been helpful to Lestat in “Memoch the Devil”. So, even though it borrowed from previous ones, I still enjoyed this novel.

Even though this is technically part of Rice's New Tales of the Vampires, this book could stand alone. There aren't heavy references to her other works. It was also a fairly fast read, it doesn't have the tedious details her works normally have.
