Charming! Very nice paced and realistic characterization, and overall interesting mystery.

The best book so far in a worthy series. The writing which has sometimes got a bit woolly in the past is now tightly focussed. And the setting is wonderful: for all its accurate period detail, this is basically a dream of the Victorian countryside as it should have been, a love letter to England that only an anglophile American could write. But there is also a surprising tenderness towards all the struggling characters, especially those who have suffered loss. The ending makes this a Victorian crime romance in the true sense of the word, a little stay in the Forest of Arden with a nineteenth-century aristocratic detective. I thought I'd enjoy this book, but not as much as I actually did.

Recommended, though I guessed whodunit.
