Kara has just joined the FBI task force responsible for supernatural crimes. The majority of the story revolves around a case Kara is investigating involving the usual murder and mayhem. It's not as intriguing as the cases in the previous books, and I did get a little impatient with all the time it took away from Rhyzkahl and his uneasy relationship with Kara. Same with Ryan and the mystery around Zack.
Overall, the Kara Gillian series continues to be smart and sexy with a refreshing blend of paranormal and police procedural that will keep you flipping pages till the end.

Add a CommentI love this series! Kara Gillian is one of my favorite heroines right now for the very fact that she's so wonderfully normal in all aspects but one: she can summon demons from the demon realm. I love that Kara's got body image issues, isn't a fan of working out and thinks a healthy breakfast is a couple of chocolate donuts and a mug of brew and hasn't had a relationship with a man last for more than a handful of months. I find her ultimately sympathetic and ever so easy to relate to. She's a little neurotic, a bit insecure and though she's a tenacious bloodhound and a hell of a detective when it comes to solving a case, and would give up her life protecting people she cares about, she's far from a know-it-all and has huge gaps in her understanding of even the forces she is able to manipulate. The ending of this book is great. There were plot twists I wasn't expecting and answers to questions that had me reeling, and the implication of those answers are mind boggling. I can't wait to read the next book.
I just love this series. My favorite thing is that Kara is both a real woman and very firmly the hero of these books. She's a regular woman, not a superhero, she's vulnerable, gets her feelings hurt, gets frightened, eats comfort food, has a temper, is just totally real. And she doesn't turn to anyone to solve her problems. I also like the character development across the series, including the supporting characters. Another thing that makes the book and the series great is the details, they're perfect without being cumbersome. And finally, I loved the cover, the publishers finally got it right by acknowledging that the books are about a fierce police woman and not paranormal romance.
