Silent film star Colleen Moore plays Hester Prynne, who is condemned by the people of her 17th century village to wear a scarlet letter "A" as lifetime punishment for bearing a child out of wedlock. The story stays remarkably true to the original novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

It's Hawthorne's turn on the pillory. Reverend Dimmesdale can't be a coward; why, he's supposed to be the hero! He would have Confessed All, but HESTER made him keep silent. She was so concerned, you know, about preserving the faith of the community. And Pearl didn't fight back when she's bullied. She sat and cried, like the dear, pious little lady she was. Meanwhile, the book struggles on, without these improvements.
