This is a good intro to pre-White House Lincoln. It is interesting to see 1940's Hollywood make a film discussing equality for slaves when in 1940 Hollywood itself edid not believe in equality for African-Americans. And even in the 21st century, Hollywood did not treat African-Americans equally as shown by the fact that for two years in a row, not one African-American was nominated for the Oscar acting categories (0 out of 40 nominations). Raymond Massey received an Oscar nomination for best actor. In 11 years, Howard da Silva, who plays the ruffian, was Black listed and prohibited from appearing in Hollywood films.

Able Lincoln in Illinois should not be compared with the other "Lincoln" movies. They don't all cover the same time in history and they all have their own strengths. The muscle here comes from a strong performance by Raymond Massey as Lincoln. We see Lincoln as a strong man who could really deliver a speech. He was a great politician and a great family man on top of it. You won't be disappointed with "Abe Lincoln in Illinois".
