Depending on how you look at it, this very entertaining novel is the 4th or the 1st in a witty suspense series for children. (They are enjoyable reading for adults, also.) The series began with *The Mysterious Benedict Society* in 2007. In that book, four children pass a mysterious and confusing test to gain a scholarship to a school for bright children. They discover that this school is really The Mysterious Benedict Society, a secret organization of people with unusual talents.

Now Stewart has gone back in time 40-50 years to show us the early life of Nicholas Benedict, the quirky genius who started the MBS. Nicholas was an orphan, being shuttled to orphanages and foster homes, when he arrived at the orphanage of Rothschild’s End. Nicholas is already a genius, with an eidetic memory, able to remember anything he reads. He is also undersized and has narcolepsy, meaning he is apt to fall asleep at particularly inconvenient moments. He has never had a friend and understands nothing about the dynamics of a family. The orphanage is in serious financial trouble, in danger of closing, and has several bullies and a staff severely deficient in the knowledge of how to take care of children.

This is clever, can’t-put-it-down writing, with interesting characters and several nice twists at the end. You could easily start with this one in the series or start with *The Mysterious Benedict Society.*

The origins of Nicholas Benedict reveal themselves in this exciting prequel. I have to admit, I wasn't very eager to read this because I thought it was going to be boing, but wow was I wrong! From the first page I was picked up on a riveting ride and didn't get off until I finished the final chapter. The only reason I docked off half a star from my rating was because I found the discovery of the treasure to be a bit anticlimactic. However, this is still a must-read for any fan, and I highly recommend this book. My favourite character is John Cole, definitely.

I loved reading about Nicolas as a kid. I think that it is funny how he is like Renie and Sticky! 😀

I really enjoyed this book. It was very well written and it's really cool to go back to Nicholas Benedict as a 9-year-old.It's hooking and interesting, though I think I liked the series a little bit more.
I would recommend it for ages 8 and above.

This book gives you some background information from where Mr.Benedict came from. The ending is more exiting then the beginning.
