Short and sweet, this final season of EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND tries to touch on what they have left to uncover. The show delves into poor grades, erectile dysfunction, owing someone a favour, disapproving of a relative's partner, and the relationship between a brother- and sister-in-law, to name a few. Personally, I think they saved the best for second last. “Pat's Secret” is a terrific episode that shows off Amy's family the way we've been dying to see them and allows us a vision of the strength in Marie and Frank's marriage despite appearances otherwise. Meanwhile, the finale is very robotic and formulaic with stilted dialogue and a going-nowhere-fast plot. Nothing is new: Marie is overbearing and insulting, Frank is hungry and uncouth, Debra is the fed-up voice of reason, Robert is brushed off in favour of Ray, Amy is a ray of golden sunshine in the downpour, and Ray acts all woe-is-me over a simple fact of life, this time a medical procedure. It is trite and boring for a conclusion. So, I choose to focus on “Pat's Secret”, one of my favourite episodes of the series, which handled the show's mantra better than others. What mantra, you say? Well, the message, above all, is that family with all its flaws are always there for one another. The message is love. And I would still recommend this season and the series as a whole for their great portrayal of realistic family life. Even if the finale sucks.
