Apparently the author of this book is a Giller Prize winner. She's not likely to get a prize for this one. I didn't make it to the end of the first chapter. Weird, trivial and long winded, boring.

Sandra, Colleen, and Jude are friends with a long history. Sandra and Colleen have been friends since Sandra's brother Richard began dating Colleen. Jude joined the group when Sandra's kids were young. Their partners, Jack, Richard, and Gus also get along and the couples have spent a lot of time together over the years. They've come through difficult times and helped each other through.
Now Sandra faces the ultimate crisis and the friends find themselves coming together in support, not just of each other, but also of their families.
The novel combines present and past and we see things from all three woman's viewpoints and from Jack's.

Excellent story of a woman dying from cancer and her family's response to it.

I was disappointed in this title. I found the story interesting, but the writing did not hold me long enough to finish the book. There were too many characters, and not enough character development causing the various voices to blend. The time shifts in the story didn't help, but ultimately it is passionate story, technically told, as opposed to a technical story told with passion.

This book by Bonnie Burnard has been a disappointment. Her previous novel "A Good House" was one of my all-time favorite books. "Suddenly" has an interesting story line about three friends who battle life's problems together. But the author writes from the present to the past, often without notice. There are numerous characters in the book and, quite often, it is difficult to discern which one the author is speaking of. The confusion is distracting from the story line.
