Just finished this wonderful anthology. The titular story is good, with much of the amorphous and wondrous magic that characterizes Moorcock's style. The other major work in this collection, "Elric of Melnibone," a prequel novel showing off his adventures before the first story, is pretty good but its need to tie everything into an ending that the reader already knows all about makes it feel somewhat anticlimactic.

Moorcock is a genius, though, and he reinvented the sword-and-sorcery genre. Definitely pick up an Elric story before reading the latest generic fantasy; you might be very glad you did.
