Great story of the lives of people living in the Five Points in New York City. Plus the lives of one rich family in Uptown Manhattan.
This series is very bloody and shows lots of fighting, sex, drinking, corruption, opium use and prostitution.
So I would not recommend it for young kids to watch. Also see "Gangs of New York," for another story of the Five Points. The extras section explain more of what went on in the ghetto area known as Five Points and the Irish Gangs vs the Anglos (White Americans).

Gritty .
Great production values

Realistic and iconoclastic historical background,.. dramatising aspects of our history that we have been taught to overlook.

Too bad series was cancelled, I was kind of hooked onto it, even though I felt it had these flaws: the lead was too much of a pretty boy, the mixture of new knowledge with historical events and the required soap opera-ish side stories. However, overall, I enjoyed the series and am sorry it was cancelled. Very interesting depiction of the newly arrived Irish & freed Blacks in 1860's NYC.
