Seraphine is the true story of Seraphine Louis aka Seraphine de Senlis, a simple and profoundly devout housekeeper who in 1905 at age 41 - self-taught and with the instigation of her guardian angel - began painting brilliantly colorful canvases. In 1912 Wilhelm Uhde, a German art critic and collector, discovered her paintings while she worked for him as a maid in his lodgings in Senlis outside Paris.

Another tour-de-force film from Music Box. Possibly THE best film you never heard about. Magnifique!

This is a true and interesting story about the life of an usual artist Seraphine Louis. She was a poor, simple and profoundly devout housekeeper who started her painting at the age of 41. Her paintings were discovered by her master a German art critic.
This is a wonderful movie with great acting and it won 7 Cesar Awards - Best picture & Best actress.

I found this film mesmerizing. It is an impeccable character study as well as a cautionary tale about the relationship between art, genius, commerce and madness.

A remarkable rendering of the true-life story and times of Seraphine Louis, whose art was visionary, fearless, and truly brilliant. Her genius and passion was born out of a lifetime of humble suffering and loneliness. Exceptional acting by Yolande Moreau. Although recognized, I feel that the art world has been less forthcoming towards her accomplishments than they have been of her contemporaries, even to this day... and so I'm grateful for having viewed such a wonderful, informative movie and for having learned.
