Slow start, I thought, until I read maybe ten pages more. :) Loved this book! The sequel is just as good (hint, hint) and even more interesting, honestly. Admittedly, the overall idea (orphan/poor kid is basically hopeless, but finds out they have a special ability and, before they know it, are in the middle of an epic adventure) could be considered somewhat cliché, but Patrick Carr keeps it from slipping that way.
The Good: I loved the way Errol struggled but eventually became stronger for it. Just about every character was well-drawn and believable (Martin and Luis are definite additions to my favorite characters list) and had their own set of problems and conflicts. The plot was wonderful and kept me engrossed fully.
The Not-quite-as-Good: Errol's ability as an onme seems just a little too handy, but it is kind of essential, so. . . My only other quibble is that Liam is too perfect. He's such a good person, it's annoying. Not sure what will happen to him, but I wish the author would have given him at least one flaw.
Anyway, I loved this book and its sequel, and would DEFINIETLY recommend it. Great Christian fantasy for teens and adults.

The book started a little slow for me, but once I got into the story, I really enjoyed it.

Pretty typical quest set up. Humble protagonist ignorant of his true identity (talent, birthright, what have you) is forced into flight by a precipitating event where, surrounded by loyal companions, he comes to terms with his new self only to take on an even greater responsibility. As quest stories go, this one is pretty good. Very similar to Terry Brooks, J.R.R. Tolkien, Michael Sullivan, and a host of others.

Fantastic read! I wished it didn't end.
