The eruption of mass protests in the wake of the police murders of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and Eric Garner in New York City have challenged the impunity with which officers of the law carry out violence against Black people and punctured the illusion of a postracial America. The Black Lives Matter movement has awakened a new generation of activists.

In this stirring and insightful analysis, activist and scholar Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor surveys the historical and contemporary ravages of racism and persistence of structural inequality such as mass incarceration and Black unemployment. In this context, she argues that this new struggle against police violence holds the potential to reignite a broader push for Black liberation.

An indispensable contribution to the movement for racial justice in “postracial” America.

This book really brought a lot of hidden things in our society to light for me, especially having read it from a political science/theory perspective for class. I found it incredibly enlightening and powerful, and it gave me a deeper perspective on the societal attitudes we have towards race in the US. If I could I would recommend this book to all people who are looking to gain more understanding and knowledge on race issues in these modern times.

This is a wonderful book. Well-written and documented, it details the history of African Americans. It's not an easy book to read. That is, it'll likely make you uncomfortable but that's good. We SHOULD be uncomfortable about the horrible record of institutional racism in this country. Without facts, though, we can't effectively work to change that structure or even discuss current events. We need more than one copy of this book in our library!
