Great characters! Harriet is a true force of nature, plus I gotta love anyone who thinks the Kinks are the most underreated band ever.

I love Shirley McLaine but I didn't care for this at all. It was very slow in the beginning and the only thing I liked about it was during the opening credits they showed vintage abs and recent pictures of her which I thought was a nice touch. Too slow moving for me so I didn't watch most of it and fast forward it to the end. Not impressed.

If not for the f- words (which kinda fit in an odd way), I would give this movie five stars. I really liked it, good acting, moving storyline, shows how a younger person can ruin her life by destroying relationships with loved ones and friends, but it can be redeemed... Some parts were disappointing, can't say because it would spoil the movie, and they could have been written differently for a better outcome. Touching, funny, thought-provoking. Probably will get it again and again; fortunately I can put it on captions, and mute the bad language if I wish.

Formulaic, but good dialogue and well acted.

Starts out slow....
But, if you can wait, ends up
interesting and entertaining, due to
the three main actors and how they
inter-act.

30 minutes was the end for me.
I agree - Guarding Tess is much better MacLaine.

Surprised I am the first to comment. Interesting how a controlling woman can change when she knows her obit will not show many good deeds and not measure up to other kindly people. She was down right mean and cruel. I thought three females swimming at night in a cold pond was a bit over the top. Glad to see Shirley still able to act in movies. Lots of pictures of her younger years.

Shirley MacLaine is fabulous as always. This is my favorite of Amanda Seyfried's roles. The little girl is extra hammy, but still pretty cute. Good movie!

My husband and I enjoyed this film! There were some great messages... try to become your best self, make mistakes, take risks, don't be afraid to fail ... Strong performances by Shirley Maclaine and Amanda Seyfried!

There are more memorable quotes but IMDb already got these better ones:

Harriet: Please don't have a nice day. Have a day that matters. Have a day that's true. Have a day that's direct. Have a day that's honest. A nice day? Mm-mmm, you'll be miserable. Have a day that means something.
===
Anne: She puts the bitch in obituary.
===
Harriet: Fall on your face. Fail. Fail spectacularly. Because when you fail, you learn. When you fail, you live.

This is not in IMDb yet:
So I hear you kids are at risk. All kids are at risk, you know. Show me a kid who is not at risk and I'll show you a kid who will be a nobody. Taking risks is what life is all about. I took a risk. I went to college. And in my day, no man wanted to marry a woman who was educated. No man wanted to marry a woman who worked. No man wanted a woman that he worked for. But my favorite was no one wanted to marry a woman in business. But those were the risks I was willing to take.
-Why? Why did you take those risks?
Because there was no way I was not going to live up to my potential. So you have to ask yourselves this question, are you willing to take a risk to do something stupid? Or are you willing to take a risk at doing something great?
