The original American full dramatization as broadcast on National Public Radio. In the ancient world of Middle-earth--a place of elves and dwarves, orcs and wizards, the darkest evil and the brightest good--a hobbit named Frodo Baggins embarks on a perilous quest: to carry the One Ring, ruler of all the Rings of Power, into the shadowy land of Mordor and destroy it in the fires where it was forged.

I borrowed this audiobook with the hopes of listening to one of my childhood favorites while on the way to and from work (I have a long drive). I was sorely disappointed because this is not the book and I was frustrated that this dramatization does not even follow the story. It changes what I believe to be a crucial story plot point within the first half hour of listening.

I think that many of the reviews below are referring to the CDs of the audiobooks. What you download is an abridged version that's dramatized. It's listed as unabridged which it is not. This is a great version of an abridged dramatized version if you do not want to listen to the original.

Just know that this is the abridged dramatized version, not the original.

This book sets a standard for English literature, fantasy and world building that often emulated, has yet to be matched. A classic that is very much a must read, and yet not an easy one.
