The Hokkaran Empire has conquered every land within their bold reach, using the combination of imperial might and sabotage to devastate and subjugate the nomadic Qorin tribes. Generations later, the decaying imperial line has led to rampant corruption and ruined fields--worst of all, the demons once kept at bay by the Hokkaran Emperor have taken advantage of the crumbling protection of border walls, and have begun to overrun villages and forests. But against all odds, a destined pair of warriors rise from the ashes, the last hope of a devastated people and a fractured nation.

A fantasy book set in an Asian inspired world with two strong female warriors who are queer? Sign me up! Everything about this book made me so excited to read this book and it did not disappoint. The book is mostly a long letter written from Shefali to the empress, O-Shizuka talking about their experiences growing up together and trying to save the world from demons. The two of them come from entirely different worlds: Shefali is part of a nomadic group of people called the Qorin and Shizuka is heir to the conquering empire. However, their moms were best friends and they were destined to be best friends as well. The relationship between the two girls is the best part of the book. This is the first in the series and I'm looking forward to what comes next.

K. Arsenault Rivera is a new author for me and this is her first novel. It is a heroic coming of age story of two girls as they grow into women from when they meet at five years old, introduced by their mothers who are both old enemies and battle companions. There is a lot of backstory neatly embedded in the main story.

One protagonist is the niece (and heir to) the emperor of an empire based loosely on ancient china, and the other is the daughter of the (female) warlord of the neighbouring steppe nomads. Despite the ages of the protagonists for most of the novel it is not a child's book. They are both warriors fighting various types of demons and their growing up includes struggling against and then embracing their mutual sexual fascination.

The fantasy world is well developed enough that you will want to read more just to understand the background. I hope this develops in further books
